'Winemaker Sandro Mosele is a master when it comes to the two great varieties from Mornington Peninsula, chardonnay and pinot noir. I find myself reviewing his wines frequently because they are always of the highest standard. Over the years the prices have crept higher but the quality has also
improved, so they are still good value – probably not wines for everyday consumption though. His latest pinot noir from the Meres vineyard is about as good as pinot noir can get. Fine and elegant, there are plenty of briar bush berry aromas to begin. Savoury wood smoke and tar are also in the mix.

The palate is full and satisfying, the aromas build into the flavours but there is more juicy dark cherry and strawberry fruit here too. This is certainly not a light pinot but yet, for all of its power and density of flavour, it still has a fine structure. The finish is long and tantalising, plenty of fresh acid and firm but
restrained tannin. I don't often cellar pinot noir although of course it can be great as an older wine. The 2012 Meres, however, is definitely a candidate for leaving alone for a few more years, I'd love to watch it evolve. Sadly, I don't think I've got the patience'
