Your Lunar New Year gift guide for Year of the Pig

February 5th marks Chinese New Year and the beginning of the Year of the Pig. If you’re planning on attending a Lunar New Year party but aren’t sure on what to bring, we’ve got you covered with this handy list!

What is Year of the Pig?

It’s probably best to start with the basics and give you some killer talking points for the big day. The pig is the twelfth animal in the zodiac and a symbol of wealth and fortune.

Those born in the Year of the Pig are considered energetic, enthusiastic, and grounded. Celebrities born in the Year of the Pig include Elton John, Hillary Clinton, John McEnroe, Mariah Carey and Elon Musk – which is probably the only thing they have in common.

During Lunar New Year it’s tradition to see family and loved ones, and bringing a gift is expected (but giving four of anything is bad form so be sure to avoid that). If you’re stumped on what you should bring, we have you covered with some choice gift ideas.

Tussock Jumper Pinot Noir

Those familiar with this particular drop may understand why this is top of the list, and if you’re not, we’ll fill you in on something – the label features a pig wearing a woolly jumper.

Aside from the appropriate branding, Tussock Jumper is a fantastic wine with delicate flavours of blackberries and floral notes.

Penfolds Bin 8 Cabernet Shiraz

Penfolds always makes for an excellent gift, and your host will love adding one of Australia’s top wines to their collection.

A jewel from the Barossa Valley, Bin 8 is a medium bodied wine that will pair well with Chinese dishes.

Chivas Regal 12YO Scotch Whisky

When all the plates are cleaned, and the night is winding down, it’s time for a nightcap. Scotch whisky fits the bill here, and Chivas Regal 12YO is an excellent example of Scotch.

It was also the favoured whisky of Hunter S. Thompson – read into that what you will.

Glenlivet 12YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky

For those who are more into single malt whisky, you can’t go past Glenlivet 12YO. This immensely smooth drop is for those who value craftsmanship.

Subtle yet complex, it has a smoky flavour with notes of spice, honey, and interestingly, pineapple. Not a bad way to add a touch of Scotland to the Lunar New Year celebrations.

Martell VS Cognac

A true symbol of luxury, cognac is the perfect way to toast any special occasion, and Lunar New Year is no exception.

Martell VS Cognac is a rich and intense spirit that is often in short supply around the globe. We can think of no better way to show appreciation to your host than with a bottle of the finest!
