Cocktails to Enjoy This World Whisky Day

This World Whisky Day, why not try your favourite whisky with a twist? We’ve got some suggestions of tasty cocktails, from the classic to the trendy.

Something fruity

Are you the sort of person who always prefers a fresh, fruity flavour to something heavier? We’d recommend an Irish Wolfhound, with lots of tangy notes of grapefruit. The best bit? It’s super easy to make.

Ingredients:

50mL Jameson Irish Whiskey
50mL ginger beer
25mL freshly-squeezed pink or ruby red grapefruit juice
Small pinch of rock salt applied to the rim of the glass
Slice of grapefruit to garnish

Method:

1. Mix ice, 50mL whiskey, 50mL ginger beer and juice in a glass. Garnish with a pair of grapefruit slices.
2. Dip a corner of one of the grapefruit slices in the salt and drop into the drink.
3. Apply salt to the rim of the glass to make a Salty Wolfhound.

Something seasonal

The Boulevardier is a sophisticated and simple cocktail. This mixture is a cool weather cousin to a summery Negroni and is a delicious way to serve whisky in the colder months.

Ingredients:

60mL 23rd Street Hybrid Whisk(e)y
30mL Campari
30mL sweet vermouth
Twist of lemon zest

Method:

1. Stir ingredients together in a mixing glass filled with ice, strain into either a stemmed cocktail glass or a rocks glass with ice.
2. Garnish with a twist of lemon zest.

Something classic

If you’re feeling a little retro, whip up a classic Old Fashioned. Similar to a Manhattan, the Old Fashioned was invented in America sometime in the early half of the 1800s.

Ingredients:

45mL Maker's Mark Bourbon
Splash of water
2 dashes bitters
1 tsp sugar
1 slice orange
Garnish maraschino cherries

Method:

1. Dissolve or muddle sugar with a splash of water in a glass.
2. Fill glass ¾ full of ice.
3. Add bourbon and bitters and stir.
4. Garnish with orange slice and maraschino cherry.

Something Southern

The Mint Julep conjures images of the Kentucky Derby and warm summer nights spent on porches. Bring a little Southern hospitality to your next gathering!

Ingredients:

60mL Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
2 tsp sugar
6-8 fresh mint leaves
Crushed ice

Method:

1. Combine bourbon, sugar and mint in the bottom a glass and stir to dissolve sugar.
2. Fill glass with crushed ice and stir.
3. Garnish with a mint sprig.

Something refreshing

Who doesn’t love a cocktail with only two ingredients? The Highball is a refreshing cocktail that is a great option for surprise drop-ins.

Ingredients:

30mL Hakushu Distillers Reserve Whisky
150mL sparkling mineral water
Half wheel of lemon

Method:

1. Pour whisky into a tall glass, add ice and top with mineral water.
2. Garnish with half a lemon wheel.
